More about Twickenham

Noted, of course, for its rugby links, there is far more to Twickenham than just sport, although on match days you'll undoubtedly be swept up in the excitement. Historically, Twickenham enjoyed a cultural heyday in the Swinging Sixties, when The Who, the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds played gigs on the fantastically named Eel Pie Island, tucked away on the river just behind the shopping centre. Typical properties in the area include the Victorian Gothic houses of Riverdale Gardens, large detached Victorian houses within the St Margaret's Trust grounds near the Twickenham Bridge, red brick Edwardian houses in Strawberry Hill, as well as 1920s and 1930s semi-detached houses around the town centre.

Twickenham is popular with families because of its good schools, both state and independent. Of particular note are the local state primary schools (St Mary's, Barnes Primary and The Queen's). For secondary schools, St Catherine's (independent) and Grey Court are well liked. In the local area there are two great swimming pools: the council-owned Teddington Pools and Pools on the Park in the Deer Park in Richmond, on the other side of the river. The nearest cinema is the Odeon in Richmond. The town centre is currently undergoing multi-million pound regeneration.

As well as the riverside walks, there is Marble Hill Park to enjoy locally, with its house, owned by English Heritage, and park. The area is also close to Richmond Park and its deer),and Kew Gardens. Hopping-wise, interesting new independent shops are opening up because of the regeneration scheme and people are flooding back to shop here, rather than heading to nearby Richmond. There is a lovely fishmonger; Laverstoke Park Farm Food shop is on King Street. The pedestrianised Church Street is famed for its boutiques and restaurants and the St Margaret's area has the most popular restaurants.

Local transport links include the A3, M3 and M4 connecting you to the South and South West of England and three mainline stations which will take you to Waterloo: 26 minutes from Twickenham, 38 minutes from Strawberry Hill and 32 minutes from St Margaret's.
