Hammersmith area guide

Hammersmith is a veritable transport hub with four tube lines connecting the area quickly and easily to almost all parts of the city. The road network is extremely well developed, with the A4 acting as the main route out of the city to the West via the Hammersmith flyover. The area also has seventeen different bus routes running through it, including from its large bus station, providing access to the rest of London. The leafy back streets and riverside paths are also popular with cyclists. It is an amazing place in which to own a home and then travel around London.

As one of Hammersmith’s more prominent letting and estate agents, we get many opportunities to hear the residents’ opinions of the local area, and one of its most universally appealing aspects is its proximity to the River Thames. It is possible to walk or cycle all the way along the riverside path past Richmond, Kew and Hampton, whilst watching the sailing and rowing taking place on the Thames. There are a number of parks and gardens in the area, and just across the river the London Wetland Centre is home to over 180 different species of birds, an observatory, a family-friendly farmyard and an art gallery.

Although Hammersmith has its own high street and shopping centre, it is also a short bus ride away from the much larger Westfield Shopping Centre, a popular destination for shopping and eating out. There are several reasonably priced gastro pubs and bars in the centre of Hammersmith, and of course the famous Hammersmith Apollo, which regularly features international artists. The Lyric Theatre features a broad range of classical music performances and plays, and offers good value ticket deals for those living locally.

Finally, there are many river-centric activities to enjoy during the year in Hammersmith, not least the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. You can also enjoy Michelin starred dining at the world-famous River Cafe. There are a number of good state schools at both a primary and secondary level in Hammersmith, including several with 'Outstanding' ratings from Ofsted. There are also several private schools to choose from, including the nationally renowned Godolphin and Latymer School, and St Paul's Girls School.
