Set within the London Borough of Hounslow in West London, Isleworth has been dubbed by the media as the 'affordable town on the Thames'. The area is opposite Kew Gardens (just across the river) and its neighbours include the more famous Richmond and Twickenham. Isleworth started life as a village and still retains that village feeling, albeit on a slightly larger scale, as well as offering riverside scenery.

Isleworth has enjoyed popularity throughout history. During the 18th century it was particularly fashionable with aristocrats. It is said that Charles Dickens was often found enjoying local pubs such as the London Apprentice. Houses and flats here are usually period properties, although there are some new (sympathetic) building developments planned.

You will find Victorian, Georgian, Art Deco and some more modern architecture here. The lovely mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced properties gives Isleworth a residential community feeling, but its location puts all of London's amenities on your doorstep.

The area is particularly attractive to corporate professionals and young families. There are some great schools in the vicinity - notably Grove Park and Belmont primary schools and St Mark and The Green School secondary schools. Isleworth enjoys many quieter residential roads, which are closed to through traffic and are perfect for growing families with younger kids.

Isleworth has a public library, public leisure centre with swimming pool and various gyms. There are four recreation grounds, which is hardly surprising in such a green area. The major hospital in the area is the West Middlesex University Hospital (NHS Trust).

In addition to the beautiful area of Old Isleworth, with its Georgian houses and parish church right on the river, Isleworth has some great neighbouring towns that you can also explore. These include Richmond Park and Kew Gardens for enjoying the great outdoors and Kingston and Hounslow for excellent shopping.

It is worth noting that Isleworth is not famed for its shopping, but it has some lovely boutiques and large supermarkets, so you won't go wanting. There is a small but attractive range of eateries and cafes in Isleworth. These offer a diverse mix of international food and simple gastro pub dining.

Transport links are good in Isleworth. You will be in Zone 4 in this area (Hounslow station is in Zone 5). There is a direct route to Waterloo from Isleworth train station (40 minutes), found on the London road and the Piccadilly Line is available at Osterley Station (you can be in the West End in 35 minutes).
