Although it is effectively a small town in its own right, Brentford is part of the wider borough of Hounslow in West London, about eight miles from the centre of London. The town sits on the confluence of the River Brent and the River Thames, with its name originating from its history as the traditional site of a major river crossing. The area is extremely popular with professionals and families - particularly due to its proximity to the city, and thanks to its good transport links. More recently, Brentford has seen the establishment of the Grand Junction Canal (now the Grand Union Canal) in 1805, and the dock area is still a major architectural feature of the town.

There are a number of parks and gardens in the area, and interesting sites such as Syon House, the residence of the Duke of Northumberland, which has an extensive park and gardens. Some of the marshy land in the area has been designated a public nature reserve, and is home to an array of wildlife.
