Acton - which means 'oak farm' in Old English - covers a large section of west London, bordering Shepherds Bush in the east, Ealing in the west and Chiswick in the south. It sits mostly within the London Borough of Ealing.
Transport links are very good, although it depends where you are in Acton. There are no less than seven stations in the area, variously served by the Central line, Piccadilly line, and District line, as well as the over ground network. It is possible to be in Paddington in seven minutes, and new connections are being added all the time. The A40, M4 and North Circular Road are within easy reach, and there are plenty of bus routes.
The centre of Acton is the stretch of Uxbridge Road commonly known as Acton High Street, at the point where it passes The Mount - a marketplace that backs onto a large Morrison's store. Nearby is Acton Park, which has a friendly cafe and is popular with families, and Churchfield Road, which feels like the heart of an upmarket village with independent shops and cafes surrounded by sought-after period terraces, including the streets collectively known as 'Poet's Corner' (on account of the streets all being named after poets; Shakespeare Road, Milton Road, Chaucer Road, and so on). The nearby Park Club is a private members' health club with extensive grounds and a busy social calendar.
Leisure activities are not generally Acton's strongest suit, but there is a complex near Park Royal with a bowling alley, cinema and restaurants, and a number of neighbourhood and chain restaurants scattered throughout the area. For theatre, live music and so on, Acton residents have to travel further afield to Ealing, Shepherds Bush or Chiswick, or further - although they do have Gunnersbury Park, with its pitch-and-putt course and Palladian mansion, on their doorstep.
There's a huge variety of property available in Acton, from rambling semis to one-bedroom flats. The streets around South Acton (near Chiswick) and Poet's Corner are popular with upsizing families, as are the generously proportioned Edwardian houses in the Creffield Road conservation area between Twyford Crescent and Ealing Common, close to two good secondary schools.
Acton is growing in popularity, even though parts of it are yet to be fully gentrified. The area around North Acton tube station, for example, retains an industrial feel, despite recent residential developments, with companies including Boden having offices and warehouses along the streets leading to the A40.
